‘It still hasn’t ended’
by Baptist Coelho,Visual Artist; Mumbai, India
Since 1984, India and Pakistan have been zealously guarding their territories on the Siachen Glacier. This endless conflict over the ownership of the glacier has been fought at an altitude of approximately 5,753 meters, which makes it the coldest battlefield on earth, with temperatures reaching around -60°Celsius. Since 2007, Baptist began researching the Siachen Glacier Conflict and has developed a large body of work in various mediums, which has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions worldwide. These artworks reveal the paradox of heroism when confronted by brutally cold climates, and the perils of uncertain border tensions.
It still hasn’t ended, is a new solo exhibition by Baptist and includes previous and new multimedia artworks. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the artist’s previous audio/video titled, “If it would only end…”, 2009, which explores the past and current conflict, through fabric and food - worn and consumed by the Siachen soldiers. The exhibition is installed at Bâtiment IV, 66 Rue de Luxembourg, 4149 Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. The exhibition is part of the conference, ‘European Cultural Parliament - Transatlantic Dialogue Forum’24’ and is supported by the University of Luxembourg, Department of Social Sciences. Thanks to the city of Esch-sur-Alzette and Bâtiment IV.
Baptist Coelho articulates unspoken stories and conjures meaning from psychological and physical disruptions caused by war and conflict. Baptist works in various mediums and has exhibited worldwide in museums and galleries. His recent eponymous monograph was published in 2023 by the In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres, Belgium. The artist was born in Mumbai, India and currently lives and works in Ypres, Belgium and Paris, France.
